The Image of God: Man and Creation
Being made in the image of God, man is a Eucharistic creature; he does not simply live in creation, he is a part of it, and sees in it the gift of God. All creation becomes a mystery of God’s presence, a means of communion. The man who sees with such opened eyes offers the creation back to God in Thanksgiving: “Thine own of Thine own, we offer unto Thee, on behalf of all, and for all.”
In this way, man fulfills his priestly role, through the reverent cultivation of the creation. And in this man, all of creation finds its voice of praise to God. In this man the moon worships God, through him the stars glorify the Creator, through such a man the waters and the rains, the dews and all of creation, venerate God and give him glory.
It is in harmony with man that creation sings a cosmic hymn of praise. Man is both composer and conductor. He brings order to the cacophony of sound and makes beautiful melodies to the Creator; only if he has ears to hear.
You are made in the image of God. Will you use your God-given authority to compose a hymn of praise in harmony with the creation? Or will you simply add to the noise? The choice is yours.
